Honoring the Maharaja: A Monument Unveiled

His Highness Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja: A Beacon of Compassion and Humanity

The Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation has graciously donated a monument of the Maharaja to the Indian Jewish Heritage Center and the Cochin Jewish Heritage Center in Nevatim, Israel.
This monument will be the first in a series for the sculpture garden at the museum, which will highlight the rich heritage of Jews from India.

His Highness Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja of Nawanagar stands as a symbol of humanity, compassion, and courage during one of the darkest periods in history. As World War II ravaged the globe, his actions became a beacon of hope for those in dire need.

selfless sense of duty

During a time of unparalleled cruelty and
persecution, the Maharaja extended a
lifeline to children, many of whom were
Jewish, fleeing the horrors of the
Holocaust. With unshakable empathy and
a selfless sense of duty, he welcomed
approximately 1,000 young refugees into
his kingdom. These children, who had lost
their families, found solace, safety, and a
future in Nawanagar.

The Maharaja’s palace became a sanctuary where the children received food, shelter, education, and healthcare, helping them reclaim a semblance oofnrmalcy. Despite facing significant domestic and international pressures, the Maharaja remained committed to their well-being, defying the dark forces of the era with extraordinary courage.

The Maharaja faced numerous challenges in securing visas, arranging transportation, and providing for the children’s basic needs. Additionally, he had to carefully navigate delicate diplomatic relations to ensure the safety of his guests. Despite these
obstacles, his determination never wavered, driven by his compassion and commitment to humanity.
